About St. Brides

The fishing community of St. Brides, located on the Cape Shore, north of Cape St. Mary's, was first known as Distress Cove. The name changed in 1870 to honor St. Bridget, one of the patron saints from Ireland.

At the time of the first census, in 1836 there were 39 people living in St. Brides, all of which were Irish. Primarily a fishing settlement, St. Brides also has a long tradition of small farming, particularly the raising of sheep. The population continued to grow over the years, as new settlers were attracted to the rich cod fishery.

As of 2016, St. Brides has a population of about 250 people. While fishing is still a major part of St. Brides, some people also travel to other parts of Canada to find employment. St. Brides is also the home of the Fatima Academy Royals, which is the only school on the Cape Shore, which serves to the seven surrounding communities. St. Brides is a beautiful community and we hope to see you visit soon.
